What time is it?

I was asked last night at an AdvoCare event to share my story in front of about 200 people. It wasn't a big deal. I'm proud of my story and I enjoying sharing. Sometimes people are blessed when they hear the journey of others. I actually did enjoy sharing.

I said something last night rolled off my tongue pretty easy but it was a pretty bold statement for a guy pushing 42; especially a former collegiate athlete and wold class age group triathlete.

Here is what I said: "If someone were to ask me RIGHT NOW when i was in the best shape of my life I would ask them WHAT TIME IS IT?"

In other words I am in the best shape of my life at this very moment. Today. Right NOW.

7:59am, Friday August 1st. Without a doubt.

Don't get me wrong. Back in the mid 90's I could run like the wind. In the early 00's I was a terror on a bike. As recent as 4-5 years ago I was a local triathlon stud flying all the around the world racing and beating the worlds best.

Yet...I claim to be in the best shape of my life now.

There as several reasons for this.

First and foremost it is a DECISION. I have committed myself to fueling my body and moving my body in the way that gives me muscles, strength, endurance and energy.

Yes I take supplements. Yes I eat clean. Yes I workout.

But it all starts with a decision and a commitment to me MY BEST and to be my best NOW.

I accept nothing less and that is my choice.

So what does that mean?

It means that everyday I get up feeling like I can conquer the world. It means that everyday I look better than I ever have and I have confidence that does along with it. It means I don't go to the doctor and I don't "feel" 41. It means that I have energy and enthusiasm up the wazoo.

It means that I can live a life of value and significance.

I have chosen to be in the best shape of my life and I am here to tell you that it is truly amazing and it is truly a blessing.

It is also truly ME and DECISIONS that I have made.... and so can you.

To many people just don't have the belief that it is possible. Another way to look at is this: You just don't think that you can figure out the route to get there.

I am here to tell you that it isn't nearly as much about the HOW as it is about the WHY or the PURPOSE.

Once you have that purpose and make the decision then the how will come to light. I promise you that. Choice to be something and make it important in your mind. The details of the how will be filled in.

Have you made that choice? Are you fed up with being in the worst shape of your life and ready to be in the BEST shape of your life?

Awesome. Remember how I said that I take supplements, eat clean and workout? If you are truly ready to change then you can join me and be coached by me ON ALL THREE! Here is how:

Did you get value from today's short message? If so then please share this article around on social media. Somewhere someone needs this message. You might be about to change a life today. THANK YOU!

Top 10 ab exercises

Everybody want to look good on the beach. Everybody want to look good in mirror selfies. Everybody wants to feel good about what happens to their shirt when they lift their hand over their heads.

Everybody wants abs.
The problem is that when you go to the beach or the volleyball courts you don't see a lot of abs. The last time you went to the beach did you did as many hot abs as you saw people doing crunches at the gym? Somehow I don't think so. Likely you saw a lot of this....

Hold on to your hats because today I am going to give you the top 10 ab exercises to help YOU get those flab abs that you have always wanted!

Are you ready? Are you ready for those killer abs that you thought only the girls in the bikini magazine could have? Here you go. The top 10 ab exercises based on my 15 years experience as a personal trainer and fitness coach!

Super secret special EXERCISE #1: BURPEES. Wait. What... What? How do burpees work the abs? What about crunches?

TRUTH: You can't spot reduce. You can only bust your ass to burn calories so you can eliminate fat. Most people will drop fat all over and the fatty layer on top of your abs may be stubborn but it will come off.
Check out Teresa's abs! NO CRUNCHES!

Burpees are the best exercise out there to get your heart rate up, help you develop functional strength and flexibility and get you super fit.

The process to developing killer abs is SIMPLE: Lower your body fat. Burpees are the best way to do that.

Here is a video showing you how to modify a burbee:

EXERCISE #2: Thrusters. This is also know as a squat to press. You can use kettlebells, a barbell or dumb bells. It really doesn't matter as long as you have weight in both hands and do a full squat and lock your arms out overhead when you come up.

This is a great core stability exercise and a real leg burner. You utilize the biggest muscles in your body (glutes) and well as your shoulders and arms. Make sure that you start with light weight and progress in weight a reps slowly. Here is a short video showing you how:

EXERCISE #3: Running (or walking FAST and HARD) with INTERVALS. Don't forget the intervals part. What is an interval? It's a period of hard work followed by a period of period of rest. The interval time doesn't matter as long as the rest is no more than double the work. If the work is 30 second then the rest should be 30-60 seconds.

A great interval workout is: 20 minutes of minute HARD, minute easy. Simple and efficient. Here is another: Each hard interval is followed by rest of the same amount of time. 1-1-2-1-1-3-1-1-2-1-1. The time combinations are almost limitless. You can do this on grass, on the roads on hills, on trails or on a treadmill.

Don't get sucked into the concept of long easy run all the time. They are OK but if you want to shed fat you need to do intervals.

EXERCISE #4: Kettlebell swings. I love kettlebell swings. We were just doing some last night and they were really killer. Swings can be a little technical but with some good instruction and a low starting weight they can be really beneficial. Before doing swing with challenging weights MAKE SURE you get some instruction from a qualified coach. If you do these wrong you can get hurt.

If you do them right you will prevent injury, have a strong back and sexy abs. SO DO THEM RIGHT!

EXERCISE #5: Sumo deadlift high-pull. (SDHP) I joke because when I write SDHP on the board I have people that have been working out with me for years that STILL ask what it is. Really...?!

The SDHP is great exercise that is easy to learn and easy to transition into during a quick metabolic workout. Just like the swings it is important to use good form and to be careful when you add weight. Make sure to challenge yourself as you get more proficient but don't be too aggressive. You doing want to get hurt!

EXERCISE #6: Push-ups. We do hand release push-ups which most everybody can do. Here is quick video showing you that those are:

A lot of people shy away from push-ups because they are hard. That is exactly WHY your SHOULD be doing them., The modification for the hand release push-up is to simply come up on your knees then lift your knees off the ground at the end. You will be amazing how many people can do this when they think they can't!

EXERCISE #7: Jump rope. Jump rope for on minute without stopping and see if you are out of breath. I dare you!

EXERCISE #8: Box jump. Same as number 7. Do 60 seconds of box jumps and your body fat will be running for the hills.

NOTE: If you are VERY overweight (i.e. 100+ lbs) you should avoid #7 and #8. The impact if you are very heavy is going to likely do more hard then good. Advice from a qualified professional is ALWAYS a good idea.

Jumping up onto a "box" doesn't have to scare you. Start but jumping up onto something just a few inches off the ground then stepping down. Slowing add height and jump down on two feet as you get stronger and feel more confident. Box jumps are a REAL heart rate shocker. LOVE THESE!

EXERCISE #9: Pull-ups. Another body weight movement that will rock your world. I am OK with assisted pull-ups because most people can't do full on pull-ups. Make it a habit of doing full range on motion (chin over bar, elbows locked at the bottom) on each rep and CHALLENGE yourself.

EXERCISE #10: Air squats. My suggestion on air (body weight) squats is to do a lot of them and the touch your but to something. A bench or a medicine ball work great. Don't sit (Unless you are just staring off. If you are then that is a great modification!

Why not weighted squats? I really truly believe that for weighted squats to be of benefit you need to be really strong and most people are not. Air squats are easy to perform and you can do them anywhere. No equipment is required and they are super easy to transition into.

Did you notice something about this list?

No crunches. No ab machine. No bicep curls. No elliptical trainer.

Why do people continue to go to the gym and focus on exercises that don't do them any good? I just don't know.

The real question SHOULD be this: How do you use these 10 exercises to get abs?

Do them as much as you can with varied weight, varied reps, varied order and shock the crap out of your body.

Do you want to see that we do for workouts? I post my daily workouts on Instagram. You can find me @RICKCOPLEY. I also post a lot of my workouts on my other blog. CLICK HERE to jump over to my "No Excuses" blog. (ricksnoexcusesbolg.blogspot.com)

Do your job

I think this is a pretty cool topic and I know that you will get value from my perspective.

Truth be told there is more "failure" in fitness then there is success. I think the reason for this is that to many people are just doing the wrong things, thinking he wrong way and having the wrong expectations.

Not to toot my own horn.....
.... but my wife and I are probley two of the most fit people you know. Also, we have a BUNCH of people that we train that are in the best shape of THEIR lives.

The point is that I know what I am talking about.

Today's topic comes from a conversation that I had with one of our champions that work out at ASM Fitness. He comes with his wife and one day I saw him walking with her on a 400m run.

I took him aside and said, "What the hell are you doing?"

You see, she didn't need his company on her walk. She was going at her pace and could complete a 3 minute walk all by herself. His job wasn't to keep her company.

His job was to put her in the car and deliver her to the workout. It was HER job to do HER workout and HIS job to do his workout. The two were confused and they can't be.

It is my job a trainer to provide a challenging workout in an encouraging and safe environment. I do that. YOUR JOB as someone getting in shape is to show up and do your best. YOUR JOB is going to be to come 99% of the way. MY job is to make sure that you are doing your job.

Does that make sense?

Too many people in this world want to do it for other people. Help others pay for things or create an easy way for them to do X or Y. Sometimes that is not helpful. Sometimes you just need to put them in the car and drop them off.

I like the word "empower". My job is to write a workout and point to it. "Go!"

Then I throw a few words of encouragement and some form pointers your way and you do it.

We all have our jobs.

If you are in need of some better health well then your job is to get healthy. Do you want to help others? Well then your job is to point them to people that can help them. You job is to encourage, support and empower.

Your job is also to stop enabling people.

What does that mean?

You and your spouse work out at 6am. Your spouse says, "I'm not going, I'm tired." If you stay in bed with him/her then you are enabling. If you get up, turn the light on and start getting dressed then you are empowering a better decision?

I hope that makes sense.

Part of your "job" as a human is to help and empower others.  Here are 5 ways that you can empower others to live a healthy lifestyle:

1. Share this blog. It may seem like I am being narcissistic and self serving but I really feel that this FREE response could change some lives. Share this and others blogs and article that teach and empower. You never know what someone might pick something up that changes their life!

2. Invite someone. REMEMBER that you can't do anything FOR people. You can, however, put them in the environment and let them decide for themselves. "I'm going to workout class, would you like to come...." It really is that easy Bring them along!

3. Live an active lifestyle and post your pictures and feelings on social media or on a blog.  We live in a digital age and that is not going to chance anytime soon. Inspire others on your journey and give them the opportunity to jump on board.

4. Be the encourager. You can do this in workout class. Your not the coach but you CAN tell someone they look great or encourage someone to keep going when he or she looks tired. Be that person that says good job and gives a fist bump at the end of the workout.

5. Wear your colors. If you belong to a gym or are involved with supplement company or any fitness organization then wear your colors. Be proud of your active lifestyle and wear it on your chest. People will ask and you can point them in the right direction.

So there you go. Do your job and you will change yourself and you will change those around you and you will change the world.

Teresa and I are super excited to announce that we are opening the 30 Day Clean Eating Challenge for August. It is opening up for a limited time. As a matter of fact it is only open till Monday at 9pm.

It's NOT ok

It's not OK to be overweight. It's not OK to wake up feeling like crap everyday. It's not OK to smoke or drink alcohol to excess. It's not OK to be broke. It's not OK to steal. It's not OK to drink and drive. It's not OK to be on blood pressure medication at 29 years old. It's not OK to eat fast food....

It's just NOT OK.

So why is society so accepting of behaviors that are just plain NOT OK?

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe it's some political correctness. Nobody wants to hurt anybodies feelings. We all want to have rights in our free society.

Yeah, man, it's cool. You have the right to be healthy because you are an AMERICAN. Nobody is going to make you eat right and exercise. You have rights!

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.... and FREE HEALTH CARE. That's what this country is all about? Right?

We accept these type of behaviors from people because it's apparently OK.

We don't judge people. We don't want to put other people down. We don't want to stand in the way of other peoples "rights".

It disturbs me to no end that liqueur stores will gladly sell booze to a homeless person that just collected nickles and dimes for hours on the street corner. What is wrong with that picture?

It disturbs me that a morbidly obese person can walk into a McDonald's and order a super size Coke with their fries, burger and dessert.

How about a doctor giving medication for blood pressure to a person that smells like cigarette smoke?

I could. Go on. All. Day.

I am here to tell you that it is NOT OK to abuse food and drugs. It is not OK to steal, drink and drive or not workout. It's just not OK. Stop accepting this type of behavior from those that you love. Don't accept it from yourself. If you are doing these types of things you are BURDEN to those of us that do not.

Health cares costs are SKY HIGH because people don't workout or eat right. SKY HIGH. People die, MANY people die because they CHOOSE to drink and drive, smoke and do so many other harmful things.

I just don't know why. I just don't know.

It doesn't matter how old you are. It doesn't matter that excuse that you have used in the past. It's time to stop accepting this bull shit from yourself and from others.

Enough is enough. Take control and take responsibility. Remember my new friend Brittany that I introduced to you the other day. Girl needs to lose a lot of weight and she is still in her 20's...

Guess what?

She chooses to no longer accept being who she way. She has taken life by the horns and knows....
So...what say you? Are you pissed off? Did I offend you? Good. Get to work and show me that you can do it. Today is the day. There is no tomorrow.

Teresa and I are starting a group 24 Day Challenge VERY SOON. Send me a quick email and I will help you get signed up if weight loss is your goal.

You are a champion. Thank you for reading. Please share if you find value. THANK YOU!

To your success!

Your health is your greatest wealth

Without your health, what do you have?

When you look at it that way then truly your health is your greatest wealth.

I have been a fitness coach for a long time. I have seen a whole lot of good and I am sad to say that I have seen a whole lot of not so good as well.

One of the things that drives me crazy is when people quit my workout program because they lose their job.

Let me give you a little background first.

The way that I make my living is people give me money and I help them reach fitness goals. It's pretty simple and straightforward. I see tremendous value in being fit and healthy and so do my clients. This is the reason that people pay me month after month for years and years.

Many times, however, people lose site of the value of what I do because of financial issues.

Do you know how many times people have called or emailed me to say, "I just lost my job I need to quit working out (or drop my membership...)"

Usually this communication happens right away. In other words, "The first thing to go is the money that I spend on fitness."

I think that should be the last thing to go.

I understand money can be tight for a lot of people. Believe me, I have been there and I have the t-shirt. The question is: Why cut out the most important thing first?

It goes the other way as well. Why do people "price shop" fitness? We have people ask us all the time: What does it cost?

Why does it matter?

I say that in jest but the point is that it is not about cost but VALUE to you.

Fitness can be like anything else in life. Sometimes you need to invest. Is it more important to go out to eat at Applebees twice a week or workout the right way?

It's a matter of priorities.

My message to you is this: Your health is your wealth. Money can be tight. Time can be issue. Commitments will always be there.

Is there anything more important than your health? No. There is not.

I encourage you to do what it takes to be fit and healthy. You can do it on your own. You can do it at a gym. In my opinion having a coach that costs you some dollars in the best way to go.

If you live in Central Florida we would love to have you come try our fitness program. It's affordable, fun and convenient. We have 19 classes per week plus Zumba and some special Saturday classes.

If you are tired of try to figure out what to do at the gym or you want to step up your game then come by and try a workout at ASM Fitness!
This is our class schedule:
* Monday - Friday 6am and 6pm
* Mon/Wed/Fri: noon
* Monday - Thursday: 5:30pm
* Tue/Thur 10am

First class is always free. What do you have to lose?

Did you get value our of this post today? If you did was would be very grateful if you would share it around. THANK YOU!

The rest muscle

If I ever find the rest muscle I am going to train the crap out of that sucker.

While the above picture is meant to be in jest I think it portrays the way I feel.

You can rest while you sleep. Go work out.

In all seriousness I think that people are WAY to concerned with rest.

So what is "rest"?

There are basically two kinds of rest.

1. Sleep. This is when the lions share of recovery happens. For most of us, honestly, this is all the rest we need between workouts.

2. Not working out. If you are not working out then you are resting. This includes time before and after your workout and time during your workout when you are recovering between sets or intervals. This is also plenty of rest.

Thank about it. You workout for lets say 45 minutes. Then you come back and do it the next day. That means your "rested" 23 hours and 15 minutes. Is that enough?

You workout is 3% of your day. You rest 97% of the time.

I'm sorry. That is too much.

The crazy thing is that many people have this warped perspective that you need to rest 48 hours to let your body "recover". That is cra cra.

In my mind that is flawed thinking.

The most fit people on the planet workout 2-3 hours per day 6-7 days per week. Of course they worked up to that but you get the point. To be more you need to do more.

So why do we think we need to do all this resting all the time?

Do we rest to prevent injury and sickness? No, we RECOVERY to do that. Rest is part of that but not all of it. To recovery we need to put the right stuff in our body and get plenty of sleep.

If you work out for 3 hours then don't drink enough water, eat like crap and barely sleep well then illness and injury are in your future.

My suggestion if you want to get fit beyond what you have done before then you need to workout more.

I did 3 workouts today. I ran 4 miles. I did 300 meters on the rower and I did a 20 minute functional AMRAP workout. I feel great!

Do I do this everyday? No. Should you do this everyday? No. Is this a great way to shock your system and push through plateaus? YES.

Here is a 7 step plan to gain AMAZING results from your workouts.

1. Do a wide variety of workouts and do a different routine each and every week.
2. Take a rest day if you feel run down or you can tell that your body really needs it. Don't force yourself to workout.
3. Do double or even triple workouts 1-2 days per week to shock your body.
4. Don't bother doing more than 3-4 workouts per week if you don't sleep 7-8 hours per night.
5. Eat more food! If you want some help with what kind of food to eat check out my wife's awesome blog: Lady Guru's Fit Kitchen.
6. Don't underestimate the importance of supplementation. We absolutely swear by Advocare Post Workout Recovery and Nighttime Recovery.
7. Challenge yourself! At ASM Fitness we are doing a rowing challenge which is making us all do a little extra. You can also train for some sort of fitness or endurance event. The CrossFit Open is a good one or any one of the hundreds of Obstacle Course Races that are out there.

Are you looking to add a longer, tougher workout into your week this week? If so then check out our Obstacle Course Race Training Class on Saturday. To register just shoot me an email at rick@yourbestfitnesscoach.com

Who do you know that wants to be fit and healthy? If you find value in our daily blog posts could you like and share this article so that your friends and family can get the same benefit? I'm sure they will thank you!

Obstacle Course Training Class

Super excited for this one!

Today's quick post is simple going to give you the details of an AWESOME workout that we are doing this weekend.

The workout is going to be at 8am on June 7th at ASM Fitness in Eustis. The address is 34 Ohio Blvd. Cost is just $10 for the 2 hour workout.

Oh, by the way, don't tell anyone, but the "workout" is going to be in the form of a fitness competition.

Where else do you get such a long workout/race/competition for just $10?

Even 5k's are like $30 these days. This is an affordable alternative to an over priced road race. Plus it's different and, dare I say, "fun"!

Just to give you a hint about the workout (which I will not totally revel until 8am on Saturday) it is going to be a two part 90 minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible). You will have to complete the first part then you start counting your repetitions for the second part. The first part will consist of a lengthy run/walk/hike so you should be comfortable with a distance of 5k or a little more!

Who is this workout for?

Are you training for a mud/obstacle run?
Are your training for a half marathon or longer running race?
Are you a triathlete looking for some variety?
Are you training for a fitness competition?
Are you wanting to up your fitness game?
Do you want to challenge you friend or co-worker but not break the bank?
Are you local to Eustis but don't want to travel far for a great event?

If you answered yes to any of the above then this is the workout for you!

Do to the size of the facility and our desire to keep the quality of the event high we need to limit the participants to just 15 people. As of Wednesday morning we already have 6 signed up.

Do not hesitate. Email me TODAY!

9 spots left. Is one of them yours?

To register simply send and email to: rick@yourbestfitnesscoach.com

I hope that you decide to take part in our special challenge on Saturday. It will be worth your time and your $10.

Do you have friends or family that are looking for a fitness program? We at ASM pride ourselves on conducting challenging workouts with a family environment. Our prices are reasonable and our facility is top notch. We always appreciate referrals. If you would forward our email address to those who you feel may need it we would appreciate that!

To your success!

What is fitness?

The readers of my blog yesterday gave me a TON of feedback.

Feedback is good. This means that a lot of people read it. As a matter of fact it had the most views ever for the first day of a blog post.

This means it's an important topic. This post today may be considered a follow up or a part 2. It's important non the less.

In case you missed yesterdays blog you can read it here: http://yourbestfitnesscoach.blogspot.com/2014/05/my-opinion-of-crossfit.html

To me the important conversation for all the feedback revolves around the question: what is fitness?

Does being stronger, faster, and leaner equal fitness? How about how much weight we can lift or how fast we can do a workout? Or run a mile? Or ride a bike? Can it be how far we can throw a ball or shoot a ball or an arrow?

Kind of makes you think, right?

If you Google the question, "What is fitness?" you are going to get hundreds of hits.

I am not here to reinvent the wheel.

Fitness is the state of feeling and looking good. You can add more words and you can play with it all you want but the fact remains. We all know what it means to be fit.

What we really want to know is how to be MORE FIT.

Notice I didn't say "fit". There is not such thing as "being fit."

"I am fit". No, you are not.

"I am getting fit". BINGO.

So how do you get more fit?

That is the real question AND the real answer. What is fitness? Fitness is knowing that you are not really fit and you need to keep working hard.

To me this means that you need to workout most days with a focus on metabolic conditioning that incorporates core strength and stability.

I believe that this could mean different things to different people and that is what makes our world so special.

We are allowed to be different.

We can do what makes us happy in our job in our recreation and in the way we workout. If you want to have lots of muscles then go for it. If you want to run fast then go get 'em. If you want to be flexibly then focus on that.

The point is that as long as you are happy doing what you are doing and you are getting better then go for it.

I see lot's of people that train in the gym with the body building modality. I would never train that way because that is not my thing. Who am I to say that is "wrong"?

I see lot's of people that run or ride endless miles. I don't do that either. Is it wrong? No way. It's right for those people.

CrossFitters do their thing. Do I do what they do? No, I do not. Again, who am I to say that they are wrong? That is not my place either.

To sum things up and to bring an end to today's post I have this to say:

Many people from many areas of fitness think that this is some sort of a pissing contest. Runners are the most fit because they can run forever. CrossFit makes the fittest on the planet. Gymnasts are the most fit. Body builders....and on and on and on. Fitness is about YOU. It is about you being a better you tomorrow. No modality, no trainer, no program, no routine is best for everybody. Fitness is about you becoming more each and every day. Period.

Thanks for reading again today. If you get value out of this post please share it around on Facebook. We appreciate that.

If you are an athlete or an aspiring athlete that wants to fuel you body that right way then jump on this webinar tonight. It's going to be really informative for you.

My opinion of CrossFit

I don't talk much about CrossFit.

Why?

I think most of us grew up with the virtue that if you don't have anything good to say then you shouldn't say anything at all. I live my life that way. I stay positive all the time and I avoid topics that become "he said she said" or a battle of who has the loudest voice.

Things have changed. I value my clients and friends to much to just stay quiet on such an explosive topic.

Today I voice my opinion on "CrossFit."

Before I dive in let me tell you a little about my background. I am not just some opinionated hack who wants to stir the pot; I don't do that. Like I said before I tend to stay out of the fray; so to speak.

I have an undergraduate degree in Sport Management and a Master's Degree in Physical Education. I have coached the sport of track and field and cross country at the collegiate Division II and III levels. I also coached high school track for 5 years in the state of New Hampshire where I was the coach for the throwing and jumping events.

I have been a Certified Personal Trainer since 1999. I have owned a personal training studio (in New Hampshire), been a YMCA Wellness Director (Golden Triangle in Tavares) and have owned Your Best Fitness Coach since January 2010. Currently I am an instructor as ASM Fitness in Eustis.

I have also been an endurance athlete at the highest level since the 1980's. I was a 4:16 miler as a Division I runner at the University of Massachusetts and have competed in triathlons all over the world. I have finished in the top 15 in the WORLD in my age group 3 separate times in the sport of triathlon. I am an Ironman finisher and was the runner up at the National Duathalon Championships in the "Double Du". (Combination of the times from off road and on road duathlon National Championships)

I tell you this not a bragging but simple to tell you that I am not some average Joe off the street that has some sort of ax to grind.

Now, if you are looking for me to either jump on the bandwagon of "CrossFit sucks" or "defend the brand" I am sorry but I will do neither. I have my own thoughts and you are about to hear them.

I love a lot about CrossFit. I really do. Just yesterday I did a workout called "The Murph". It pushed me and it pushed my clients. We had fun and really pushed the limits to get some great results.

The Murph was actually how I found CrossFit about 6 years ago. I was working at the Y back then and a local firefighter named Matt was working out and he told me he was "CrossFitting". Of course I asked what that was and he directed me to the website where they posted a WOD (workout of the day) everyday.

Awesome. I check it out and the WOD for the day was The Murph: 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, 1 mile run.

I did the workout and was sore for 5 days.

Was that a sign?

The next week I tried another workout called "Linda". I couldn't get through that workout and the next one I tried had swings and I hurt my back doing them wrong. Another sign?

For the next few years I did a few CrossFit workouts here and there. They were challenging and fun. For the most part though I found them difficult to do at the YMCA and at the church where I started teaching classes when I left the Y in 2010.

Meanwhile, as you likely know, CrossFit has exploded. It has exploded on TV with the CrossFit games. Gyms are popping up everywhere and everyone seems to want to do CrossFit.

Isn't this a good thing? Isn't this what we want? Don't we want people off the couch and getting into a workout culture and getting fit?

Yes we do and that is one of the great things that CrossFit has done. They have made working out and fitness in general kind of cool. They have made high intensity training part of the mainstream. This is how people get results! Thanks to CrossFit the "sport" of fitness is here.

I think that is cool.

But is CrossFit for everybody? No, sadly it is not.

Is the concept for everybody? Yes, it certainly is.

So what is wrong with CrossFit?

The real impetus for me writing this piece today is an article that is spreading like wildfire on Social Media. Here is a link to the article: http://www.dailydot.com/opinion/why-i-dont-do-crossfit/

The basic problem with CrossFit is that they focus too much on weight. My feeling on fitness is that you need to focus your goals on how YOU change and not how much weight you can do. I feel the best measure of fitness is what you can do with your body without resistance. When you start focusing on exercises with a lot of weight then your goal starts to be to move more weight.

Right or wrong that is my opinion.

As a personal trainer for 15 years here are some opinions that I have.

1. You should never do snatches. The movement is too technical for people to grasp and it serves little purpose in terms of function. So why do it? Save that one for the Olympics.

2. You should never dead lift more than your body weight. Again, why do that?

3. You should never clean more than about 2/3's to 1/2 your body weight. Cleans are a great exercise to learn because you need to do it to get the bar to your shoulder to do presses or thrusters. Doing much more than 1/2 your body weight equals a law of diminishing results in my book.

Why do I mention these exercises? Much of the CrossFit program is built around these 3 exercises. To do CrossFit you will violate all of these rules and in my opinion the risk versus the potential return is to great.

This is primarily the reason that I don't do CrossFit nor do I recommend CrossFit.

If you read the above article she goes into the reason for not doing "high weight high rep" Olympic lifts and she is pretty on point. The tone is a little to elitist for me but she does make valid points about the purpose of Olympic lifts.

There is one thing that she talks about that I believe is off base. She talks about trainers not being certified and the supervision at CrossFit gyms not being what it should be. Honestly I think that is a bunch of CRAP.

I know lot's of people that go to CrossFit and some CrossFit coaches. They know what they are doing and I would NEVER try to bring the whole brand down like that.

According to the author of the article you pretty much need like a PhD to be a fitness coach. That's ridiculous. Who really has the money to get instruction like that? If you have millions to spend to get Olympic level coaching then go at it. Most of us do not.

So the questions remains. CrossFit? Good or bad? Safe or not safe?

You will hear people shouting from the rooftops of both sides. Everybody has an opinion.

Here is the way I look at it: there is some extreme stuff out there.

An Ironman? People claim that you can get hurt doing CrossFit. How about training 20-30 hours per week for an event that will take 8-9 hours for the ELITE. That's ridiculous.

How about a marathon? The human body isn't meant to run 26.2 miles. I'm sorry. It just isn't.

If you think about it endurance sports are crazy. Who isn't going to get hurt training that much?

When you do CrossFit, or any kind of working out for that matter, you will get hurt while working out. You will twist your ankle, you will hurt you knee, you will pull your back.... TRUTH.

Does it beat the alternative?

If you sit on your ass all day you surely won't hurt your elbow doing a muscle up. Your surely won't hurt your back doing dead lifts if you sit on the couch watching TV all day. But, if you workout you will shed body fat and increase your endorphin levels thus live better with less illness and disease.

If you want to do CrossFit then have at it. I am not going to blast the brand just because I don't agree 100% with the methods. Is it safe? For the most part, if you do things the right way it is safe. In my eyes it is better to do CrossFit then to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes day and do the silly circuit at the Y.

I am not a CrossFit instructor and I do not go to a CrossFit gym.

I do train upwards of 50 people per week and I train my wife and myself. If we don't do "CrossFit" well, what do we do?

Basically, we program our workouts very similar to what CrossFit does. The difference?

No heavy dead lifts. No snatches. No heavy cleans. No heavy squats. No heavy anything.

What do we do instead of the lifts? We do many of the functional exercises that CrossFit does plus we run / walk / row. If you want to learn more about our program shoot me a quick email and I will explain more; that is not the intent of the article today.

In today's Social Media crazed world anybody with an account and an opinion can be an expert. Anybody can shout from the roof tops how wrong something else is. Be very leery of those people. Be very leery of the people that do nothing but bring others down without presenting a real alternative.

Be leery of the Facebook seagulls. You know, the ones that show up, squawk loudly, shit all over the place then leave. They don't really care about you they just want to make noise and make a mess.

I don't want to be that person but I do feel that with my credibility with this topic I owe it to my followers to state my opinion.

If you want to do an Ironman or train for the Olympic Bobsled Team, or do a marathon, or climb Mount Everest, or do a 5k or do CrossFit...who am I to stop who? Who am I to say, "Don't do that, you might get hurt?"

I am not.

Understand the risks and go for it.

I do not do CrossFit because I has a basic difference on opinion with the programming. No more and no less.

Haters will hate. Seagulls with squawk, shit and leave. True professional offer an opinion, thought processes and alternatives. I hope that I have treated with topic with the respect it deserves and I hope that you got value from today's post.

If you found this article compelling and informative I would appreciate it if you shared it on social media. Thank you!

To your success!

Another trainer secret

Want to keep today's message short and to the point. In today's video I review a secret that most good trainers know ABOUT YOU. Yes...we do know.
So you wanted the video and you say something like, "Well this may be kinda true but not for me..."

Whatever. It's the truth and you know it.

So what are some ways what we are dishonest with ourselves and out trainers.

1. How often we I go out to eat? "Not very often..." could mean 3-5 times per week which is a big bad deal.
2. How much do I eat? Generally people think they eat too much when in reality they don't eat enough.
3. How often do you eat fruits and veggies? "All the time..." Yeah, right. I had an apple last week is more like it. Potato chips do not count as a vegetable.
4. "I eat a good breakfast!" Hmmm.... coffee and a danish. NG. (no good)
5. "I do a cheat day once a week OR SO...." Sometimes I think you should finish that sentence with, "only on days that end in Y".

The point of the video is right on. Don't kid yourself. Be honest with the trainer in the mirror and get the help of your coach. Your body will thank you!
